Cairo Geniza

Biblical Manuscript

AKA Cairo Genizah

(dated 6th-8th century A.D.)

A collection of 200,000 Hebrew and Aramaic fragments found in a walled off and forgotten geniza in an old synagogue in Cairo, Egypt. That synagogue had been Saint Michael's Church until A.D. 882. The fragments are invaluable for shedding light on the development of the Masoretic work prior to the standardization instituted by the great Masoretes of Tiberias.
